Why Organic?

What is Organic?

Organic is defined in many ways. From carbon based organisms to a natural lifestyle, organic has a, well, organic definition. What’s important to remember when shopping Organic Abode is that organic means chemical-free, health conscious products. Our goal is to provide healthy products that minimize negative health affects to you and your family.

Choosing Organic

Organic is more than a definition for living beings or living simply, it’s a philosophy and a way of life. When you choose organic foods and products, you’re making a choice in favor of your health and the health of your family. The world today is full of products, full of choices, and sadly, full of  chemicals that are harmful to our bodies. At Organic Abode we recognize the importance of a healthy lifestyle and we’re committed to providing you quality organic products that are free of harmful chemicals and pesticides. Make your choices organic – and you choose your health.

The Importance of Organic Mattresses

Most of us spend nearly a third of our lives in bed. Some of us wish it was longer! That’s why choosing an organic mattress will be the best decision you make. Most standard mattresses today are filled with materials and processed with chemicals in an effort to make them “safe”. In fact, mattresses chemically treated to protect you from fire are actually proving to be more harmful than helpful. The effort to protect you from fire, allergens, and dust mites can be addressed with chemical free, healthy alternatives. Pure wool will act as a flame retardant and natural dust mite repellent while barrier cloths cover your mattress to protect from bacteria, mold, and dust mites. Most importantly, mattresses made from 100% organic rubber, unlike conventional mattresses, won’t out gas or emit potentially toxic substances that can absorb into your lungs and skin causing very serious health problems.

Rest assured that our variety of natural and organic mattress and bedding will provide you with the right sleep solution.

Why Organic Foundations?

Our foundations match our mattresses with the same side quilting with wool batting for moisture control and air flow. The same premium organic cotton and wool from our happy organically raised sheep. Our woods are never kiln dried as that requires use of toxic gases and we use only poplar as it is hard, durable, dries naturally and does not emit a natural fragrance. By naturally drying in an indoor environment, the wood will have a longer life span. Our springs are heat treated to retain shape and sturdiness and are electrically neutral. Our supports on the slat foundations are made from natural rubber. No formaldehyde based glues are used on our products.

All foundations also feature our 20 year manufacturer’s warranty (10 year fixed, 20 year prorated)

Why Organic Bedding?

Most bedding is made from cotton – and unfortunately, most cotton fields are heavily treated with pesticides. Choosing organic cotton bedding puts clean, healthy sheets against your skin while supporting farmers that practice safe, sustainable farming. Organic bedding is nice for you and your body and even nicer for the land that generates it.

Sleep Better With Organic Pillows

For the best night sleep you can get, choose a pillow that supports your head and neck and stays clear of aggravating allergens. Choosing pillows filled with pure organic wool, natural and organic cotton, or natural latex provides the comfort of a great night’s rest without the harmful toxins.

Organic Crib Mattresses – a Safer Sleeping Place

It’s been said many times that children are like little sponges. They learn so much so fast! But have you considered their bodies are also like  sponges? When a child is growing they absorb chemicals into their bodies easily and developing minds and bodies need a safe place to grow. And if you think adults slept often, babies sleep 50% of their time in the first months after birth. That’s a lot of time to be exposed to  materials in a mattress! Choosing natural materials will ventilate body heat, offer more comfort, and prove more durable than typical synthetics used in standard production crib mattresses. Most importantly, natural materials are free from harmful agents that can impact your child’s health.

Studies have also shown the materials used in cribs can be converted to nerve gas which may correlate to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) – which is now being cited as infant death resulting from an environmental poisoning in the crib. In addition, chemicals used to make bedding flame retardant, has been found in incredibly high levels in an  average American family. Studies show that choosing an organic mattress for your children is the only safe alternate.

Choose Organic Baby Bedding

Just like adult sheets, baby sheets are made from cotton picked from fields heavily treated with  pesticides. Remember, your child spends almost 50% of the first year sleeping – by choosing organic cotton you put clean, healthy sheets against your baby’s skin.

Organic Clothing for Your Children

While kids may have a free pass to be naked more often than most of us, children, like adults, are usually clothed. That’s a lot of time to be exposed to material created from crops treated with chemicals and pesticides. Harmful residue can absorb into clothing that even a vigorous washing can’t remove. Purchasing organic cotton clothing is better for your skin, better for your children, and better for the environment.

Natural Furniture

Ninety percent of all new bedroom furniture is made using medium density fiberboard, (MDF) made from wood chips glued together under pressure and typically covered with a plastic or wood veneer. This material releases toxic fumes from chemicals like formaldehyde for years after its construction. Why sleep on toxic furniture, when you can have natural, healthy solid wood Pacific Rim beds for a comparable price?

Why an Air Purifier?

The air is full of airborne particles our lungs have to work hard to process and eliminate. Sometimes these small particles can end up deeply lodged in places where the body’s natural defense system can’t manage them – potentially causing some serious damage!

Indoor Air Quality is one of the most complex health issues confronting every person living and working today. Recent research has found that the quality of air in our homes and offices is often 3-5 times worse than the outdoor air. If you stop to consider the amount of time spent indoors, you quickly realize just how big a threat to your health indoor air quality really is. Breathing clean air affords your immune system the time it needs to rest and rejuvenate. Just as you need sleep, your immune system needs to rest in order to function properly. If you are sleeping or working in a polluted environment, your immune system never gets a chance to rest up. Air pollution is linked to: allergies, chemical sensitivities, fatigue, asthma, bronchitis, etc.

The air purifiers we carry can remove:

  • Allergens
  • Asthma triggering irritants
  • Chemicals, Gases & Odors
  • Mold, Mildew & Fungi
  • Germs, Viruses & Bacteria
  • Smoke

Air purifiers draw in these particles and filter them out of the air you breathe. The effectiveness of air purifiers depends on the percentage of pollutants the device removes from the air and the time it takes the device to process the air. For example, a filter may remove 99% of the pollutants from the air that passes through it but the air flow rate may only 10 cubic feet per minute (cfm). Even though the air may come out clean, it will take a long time to process the air in a typical room of 1000 cubic feet. Consider your needs when choosing an air purifier that’s right for you.

Why Natural Bath?

For some of us, getting out of the shower is the hardest part of the day. Make it easier with plush, organic cotton towels and bath sheets. The towels and sheets are made from cotton terry that is free from chemicals, pesticides, and other harsh pollutants.

Filtering Your Water

It’s no exaggeration to say water is the “stuff of life”. As human beings, 90% of our fluid system is comprised of water. So why wouldn't you want to choose the healthiest, cleanest water available? That’s where water filter’s come in. Water today is compromised by many activities – some as simple as the process of going through the pipes that transport it. A water filter helps remove sediment and chemicals that are actually harmful to your body. Read more information about  Multi-Pure and choosing a water filter that works for you.

Organic Toys Are a Better Choice

Ever notice how often a toy goes straight into your baby’s mouth? Of course, it’s more often than we’d like (and seemingly at the most inopportune moments!) By choosing organic toys you make sure that those adorable oral moments are free of toxic material. Read more to see why organic toys are better than  plastic.
